What is Meditation?
According to an article published in the New York Times, meditation is a simple practice which can reduce stress, increase calmness and clarity and promote happiness. And, you can practice meditation anytime and anywhere.
A Little Background Information
Different forms of meditation are constantly being studied. In fact, archaeologists noted evidence of meditation in wall art dating back from approximately 5,000 to 3,500 B.C. The images depict people sitting in various meditation postures.
1. Guided meditation, also called guided imagery or visualization, is a type of meditation where you form mental images of places or situations that are relaxing to you.
Try to use as many senses as possible, such as smells, sights, sounds and textures. You can be led through this process by a teacher or guide, too.
2. Tai chi (pronounced TIE-CHEE) is a form of gentle Chinese martial arts. In tai chi, you perform a self-paced series of postures or movements in a slow, graceful manner while practicing deep breathing.
3. Mantra meditation is a style of meditation where you silently repeat a calming word, thought or phrase to prevent distracting thoughts.
